John M. Kinney Obituary

Hugh Meteyard, aged 93, passed away peacefully on December 8, 2024 in Allentown, PA. He was preceded in death by his wife and best friend, Anne (Woolaver) Meteyard, and his beloved daughter, Sally (Meteyard) Christine. Hugh is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth Gill (Jeffrey), son in law Robert Christine, and five grandchildren: Emily Carballeira (Dan), Allison, Ryan, Ashley Gill and Olivia Christine.

Hugh was born in Ilford, Essex, UK on November 23, 1931 to Herman and Winifred (Marriott) Meteyard. In 1953, he set sail aboard the Queen Elizabeth bound for a new life in the United States. Settling in New Jersey, Hugh worked various jobs within the farming industry until securing a job at Ethicon, Inc. as a grounds keeper. It was here that he met his life partner, Anne, and they married in 1963. Their two daughters, Sally and Elizabeth, followed soon thereafter in 1965 and 1967, respectively. Ever the hard worker, Hugh worked a full time job to support his family and attended Trenton State College in the evening, where he eventually earned a BA in education. He became a teacher at Union Township School in NJ where he taught 7th and 8th grade Social Studies for many years.
Hugh was an avid history buff and loved a rousing conversation about almost any historical topic. He was a voracious reader and continued to enjoy books until his passing. It was often said that Hugh was the epitome of an English gentleman, always ready with an interesting story and finding connection with friends and strangers through shared ideas or experiences. His warmth, kindness and love will be missed.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Hugh’s life during calling hours on Thursday, December 19, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Finegan Funeral Home, 4080 William Penn Highway, Easton, PA. Elizabeth will share heartfelt words of love and remembrance for Hugh at 4:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Hugh’s name to the Bethlehem Area Public Library Children’s Fund @ www.bapl.org/give/childrens-fund

Hugh’s memory will forever remain in our hearts and his life shines as an example of the power of curiosity and a never ending desire to keep learning.
