Honoring Service – Preserving Legacy
A Commitment to Those Who Served
At Finegan Funeral Home, we are deeply honored to walk alongside military families in their time of loss. As a veteran-owned funeral home, we understand the responsibility and sacred trust involved in honoring a life of service.
Whether your loved one served recently or many years ago, we ensure their sacrifice is remembered with dignity, reverence, and care.
Military Funeral Honors
The basic Military Funeral Honors ceremony consists of the folding and presentation of the United States flag to the veteran’s family and the playing of Taps. The ceremony can be performed by a federal funeral honors detail consisting of at least two members of the Armed Forces Branch in which the veteran served, or veteran volunteers from a local American Legion Post may be contacted to perform the service as well. It is up to the discretion of the deceased veteran’s family.
Who Is Eligible for Military Funeral Honors?
You may request honors if your loved one was:
- Military members on active duty or in the Selected Reserve.
- Former military members who served on active duty and departed under conditions other than dishonorable.
- Former military members who completed at least one term of enlistment or period of initial obligated service in the Selected Reserve and departed under conditions other than dishonorable.
- Former military members discharged from the Selected Reserve due to a disability.
We will help you confirm eligibility and complete any required paperwork.
Burial in a National Veterans Cemetery
In addition to honoring Veterans through the Military Funeral Honors ceremony, families may choose burial in a National Veterans Cemetery. We work closely with the Veterans Cemetery of the family’s choice to ensure that every detail is coordinated and the service unfolds with grace and respect.
Who is Eligible for Burial at a National Veterans Cemetery?
Veterans, service members, spouses, and dependents may be eligible for burial in a VA national cemetery—as well as additional benefits—if they meet one of these requirements:
- The person qualifying for burial benefits is a Veteran who didn’t receive a dishonorable discharge, or
- The person qualifying for burial benefits is a service member who died while on active duty, active duty for training, or inactive duty for training, or
- The person qualifying for burial benefits is the spouse or surviving spouse of a Veteran (even if they remarried after the Veteran’s death), or
- The person qualifying for burial benefits is the minor child of a Veteran (even if the Veteran died first) or, in some cases, the unmarried adult dependent child of a Veteran.

The DD Form 214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty) is the preferred proof of service.
